Chips&Media Integrates its Video IP into AI PC Chips, Entering the AI PC Ecosystem

Seoul, South Korea – Jul 03, 2024

[EDAILY] Chips&Media, specializing in video codec IPs, announced on July 3rd that its video IP has been applied to the latest AI PC chips of a leading fabless mobile chipset powerhouse in the United States.

Chips&Media's video IP-embedded AI chips have been highly evaluated in the market, as they have improved both the performance and power consumption of AI PCs compared to existing PC chips with mounted CPUs, GPUs, and NPUs, based on their expertise in chip design capabilities.

Chips&Media stated, "We have provided 4K Encoder video IPs with AV1 standard. We expect additional contracts to support both the Decoder and Encoder, aligning with the expansion of the AV1 standard ecosystem and the growth of the AI PC market. Our IPs will also be applied to mobile APs in the foreseeable future.”

Chips&Media signed its first contract with this customer in September 2021 and has generated revenue since then. This AI chip launch for PCs will strengthen the partnership, leading to increased customer demand for AI PC chips. Steady additional sales are expected as new chips are developed.

In the current AI PC era, disruptive changes are anticipated in the existing laptop market. On-device AI technology applied to AI PCs performs well without a network connection, excelling in real-time processing and data security.

Additionally, it can provide a longer battery life by reducing power consumption and significantly improves work efficiency by incorporating AI-based content creation, automation functions, and productivity tools. Canalys, a market analyst firm, expects AI PC shipments to reach 19% by 2024 and 60% by 2027.

“As the demand for AI PCs increases, many fabless companies are stepping into the development of Arm-based Windows chips, and we see more opportunities to provide our technologies, as our IPs enable high-performance video processing and low power consumption, maximizing the performance of AI PCs,” said Chips&Media. “By entering the AI PC ecosystem, we will focus on getting ahead in the growing AI PC market by creating diverse revenue opportunities.”
